Letter, June 1865, to his nephew encourages his studies. Letter, Feb. 20,1880, to the editor of the Chicago Times in response to an article that attributed the winning of the Battle of Buena Vista to Mississippi troops. He gives an account of the actions of Illinois regiments in the battle, particularly the 2nd under command of Colonel Bissell, and their substantial part in winning it.
